This article is essentially a "how to" for non-economists that wish to measure the impacts of various types of tourism on the local economy. Written in an easy to understand style, this article is targeted at tourism professionals and addresses the primary areas that are misunderstood when attempting to assess likely impacts, such as measuring sales increases instead of income increases, exclusion of local residents from survey data, etc.

As background, this article covers all of these issues in the context of an actual survey performed at a festival in Maryland.
